The Annaprasana — Your Child's First Rice Ceremony

The Annaprasana — known by different names across South India, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala — is the ceremony of the first solid food. Rice, cooked and blessed, is fed to your child for the first time by a grandparent or elder. It is one of the sixteen sacred samskaras. It is also, for many families living in the UK, one of the ceremonies that most connects their child to a culture and a homeland that may feel far away.

Ravi photographs Annaprasana ceremonies with a genuine understanding of what is happening and why. The selection of who feeds the rice first. The prayers. The moment baby tastes something new for the very first time. These are the photographs your child will one day look at and understand something about who they are.

Typically performed when baby is 5–6 months old, the Annaprasana is usually held at home or at a temple. We come to you, wherever the ceremony is most meaningful for your family.

What We Capture

Photographing the Ceremony With Respect

Ravi does not move around the ceremony visibly or disruptively. He works quietly, positions himself carefully, and uses only natural light so there is no flash interrupting the atmosphere of the ritual. Families often say afterwards that they forgot we were there — and yet every key moment is in the gallery.

If the priest has preferences about photography during certain parts of the ritual, we always respect them. We will discuss this with you before the ceremony and plan accordingly.

UK Annaprasana Ceremonies

South Indian families across Coventry, Birmingham, Leicester, London, and the rest of the UK hold Annaprasana ceremonies that are as careful and meaningful as any held in India. Many families have grandparents visiting for the occasion. The ceremony becomes doubly precious — a connection between your child's UK life and their Indian heritage, held in one room, in one afternoon.

Adding a Short Film

A short cinematic film of the Annaprasana ceremony — 2–4 minutes, with audio from the ceremony — is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give your family in India who could not be present. We offer this as an add-on to photography coverage.

Common Questions

What is the Annaprasana ceremony?
The Annaprasana is the South Indian ceremony of a baby's first solid food — typically rice, blessed and fed by a grandparent or elder. It is one of the sixteen Hindu samskaras and is usually performed when baby is 5–6 months old.
Do you travel outside Coventry for Annaprasana ceremonies?
Yes. We cover families across the UK including Birmingham, Leicester, London, Manchester, and beyond. Travel within 30 miles of Coventry is included.
Do you use flash during the ceremony rituals?
No. We use natural light only. Flash is never used during ritual moments out of respect for the ceremony and the family's privacy. This also means the atmosphere of the ceremony is completely undisturbed.
Can you photograph both the Annaprasana and the first birthday?
Yes. Many families combine the Annaprasana with their child's first birthday celebrations. We can cover both as part of the same session or create a combined package — enquire for details.
Can family in India watch or receive the photographs?
Your private gallery can be shared with anyone — family in India can download full resolution photographs directly. We can also create a short film of the ceremony that captures the audio and atmosphere for those who could not attend.
