The Annaprasana — Your Child's First Rice Ceremony
The Annaprasana — known by different names across South India, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala — is the ceremony of the first solid food. Rice, cooked and blessed, is fed to your child for the first time by a grandparent or elder. It is one of the sixteen sacred samskaras. It is also, for many families living in the UK, one of the ceremonies that most connects their child to a culture and a homeland that may feel far away.
Ravi photographs Annaprasana ceremonies with a genuine understanding of what is happening and why. The selection of who feeds the rice first. The prayers. The moment baby tastes something new for the very first time. These are the photographs your child will one day look at and understand something about who they are.
Typically performed when baby is 5–6 months old, the Annaprasana is usually held at home or at a temple. We come to you, wherever the ceremony is most meaningful for your family.
What We Capture
- The preparation — the setting, the gathered family, the sacred items arranged
- The priest's rituals and the family's participation
- The first feeding moment — grandparent or elder giving baby their first taste of rice
- Baby's reaction — the expression in that first moment of solid food
- Multi-generational portraits with all who gathered
- The celebration and candid family moments after the ceremony
- Traditional cultural details — the thali, the sacred items, the decorations
Photographing the Ceremony With Respect
Ravi does not move around the ceremony visibly or disruptively. He works quietly, positions himself carefully, and uses only natural light so there is no flash interrupting the atmosphere of the ritual. Families often say afterwards that they forgot we were there — and yet every key moment is in the gallery.
If the priest has preferences about photography during certain parts of the ritual, we always respect them. We will discuss this with you before the ceremony and plan accordingly.
UK Annaprasana Ceremonies
South Indian families across Coventry, Birmingham, Leicester, London, and the rest of the UK hold Annaprasana ceremonies that are as careful and meaningful as any held in India. Many families have grandparents visiting for the occasion. The ceremony becomes doubly precious — a connection between your child's UK life and their Indian heritage, held in one room, in one afternoon.
