Photographing the Thottil with Understanding
The cradle ceremony — the Thottil in Telugu, the Thoddil in Tamil — is one of the most meaningful rituals in South Indian culture. It is the formal moment of welcome. The naming of your child. The gathering of family across generations to bless a life that has just begun. Three generations may be present. Some have travelled from India. Some are joining by video call because they could not make the journey.
Photographing this ceremony requires more than a camera and a list of shots. It requires understanding. Ravi is a South Indian father who has attended and photographed these ceremonies many times — not as an observer, but as someone who knows what the Thottil is, who understands the significance of the priest's role, and who knows which moments are unrepeatable.
We do not need to be briefed on the ceremony sequence. Ravi already knows the thottil, the naming ritual, the aarti, the moment baby is placed in the cradle for the first time. We position ourselves before those moments happen.
What We Capture
- The preparation — the decorated cradle, the gathered family, the atmosphere before it begins
- The priest's rituals and the family's responses
- Baby's first placement in the cradle — the moment every family wants forever
- The naming announcement and the family's reaction
- Multi-generational portraits — grandparents, parents, baby, siblings
- The family celebrations after the ceremony
- Candid moments between rituals — the conversations, the laughter, the tears
UK Cradle Ceremonies — Our Experience
South Indian families across the UK — in Coventry, Birmingham, Leicester, London, Manchester — hold cradle ceremonies that beautifully blend tradition with their British home. Some are held at temples. Many are held at family homes. Some incorporate both. We have photographed all of these settings and we adapt to wherever the ceremony is most meaningful for your family.
If grandparents or family have travelled from India for the ceremony, we make sure they are part of the formal family portraits. These are often the most precious photographs in the entire gallery.
Film as Well as Photography
Many families choose to add a short cinematic film of the cradle ceremony — a 3–5 minute edit with audio from the ceremony that can be shared with family in India who could not attend. This is one of the most meaningful additions available, and something that becomes more valuable with every year that passes.
